Background

Due to climate, geology, and new construction, multiple road collapses have occurred domestically, with sinkholes a significant concern. Since sinkholes can have various causes, simply filling them may not stop ongoing ground subsidence. Therefore, it is essential to establish a system that can monitor underground geological conditions, assess soil stability, and verify the effectiveness of ground improvement measures.

Objectives

Early detection of sinkhole precursors is challenging because gradual subsidence caused by water infiltration or slow soil loss can be hard to identify. Therefore, long-term monitoring and risk assessment are essential.

The quality of geological improvement works is verified by comparing conditions before and after treatment, using a combination of geophysical surveys and borehole sampling.

Approach

GTE applies advanced multi-frequency and array ground-penetrating radar (GPR) technologies to detect various types of sinkholes and ground collapses. With rich experience in verifying geological improvements, GTE successfully restores subsurface layers through grouting, backfilling, and stabilization methods. Key projects include the Keelung Bachimen Breakwater, Tamsui Ocean Viewing Plaza, Taoyuan Airport pavements, and multiple new construction and roadway sites in Taipei, Suao, Zhubei, and Zhudong.
